What we fund

At the beginning of each financial year Trustees adopt an annual budget that takes account of the forecast financial performance and current financial position of the Trust and reflects where we believe the Trust should be directing its business focus.

As the budget is instrumental in determining the level of community dividend that will be made available each year for distribution there can be no guarantee the number, value or type of grants awarded one year will be matched in the next.

Having determined the level of annual community dividend, we allocate the available funding between the purposes we wish to support based on our purpose as set out in Section 13 of our Act.

These funds are either subject to a competitive application process or, where considered appropriate for strategic reasons, automatically awarded to specific recipients.

  • For the 2024/25 financial year Trustees have confirmed a budget of $160,000 for community distribution under various categories.

    Education, personal development, hardship

Each year a large part of our funding is allocated to education to our local schools. This includes a hardship fund which the school can apply for on behalf of students in need. We offer sponsorship for a Greytown student to attend the Outward Bound Korowai course held in September and support the Kuranui College Breakfast Club and annual Matharapa event. We have also included a scholarship scheme into our funding programme.

This year the total allocation for our education funding category is $75,750.

    Community

In July we hold a community funding round for social, cultural and environmental projects and activities (now closed) and sponsor various community events such as the July Festival of Christmas for which the Trust was a major sponsor this year. An allocation for community projects makes up the remainder of the $73,000 under this funding category.

    Sport and active recreation

Our funding commitment under this category is to the Greytown Sport and Leisure Society. The Trust supported the Society with a payment of $11,250.

After being the main sponsor of the Society since its inception in 2000, funding for the Society has now been taken over by the South Wairarapa District Council.

  • Two core criteria apply for an individual or organisation to be considered eligible to receive a grant:

An individual must be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of Trustees that he or she is a resident of the Greytown District. Likewise, an organisation must be based within the Greytown District or, if not, be able to demonstrate that it operates within the Greytown District and provides a service or benefit to Greytown residents.
